Hurds Gulch Commune

In the summer of 1972 we packed up our belongings and headed north to Siskiyou County.  We were starting a commune on 1,200 acres of land with some other teachers and people from Berkeley.  There was no electricity and very little water.  Oh, the things we had to learn.

Our sleeping space for the next two and a half years, while we were building our dome, was a tee pee.  A great place to sleep if it isn't raining or cold. The first winter we were in the tee pee the temperature dropped to twenty below zero.  Ron would wake up with icicles forming off his beard and mustache.  When it would rain, which wasn't often we had wet beds.  During the day we lived in the little leanto called the "Lanai".  In the winter we made it warm and in the rain it was dry.  But when we finished the dome we had a real house that we made with our own hands and our own sweat.  We did feel like we could take care of our selves.
OH THE THINGS THAT WE LEARNED!
